on the bookshelf in hell

so i'm at borders tonight killing some time and i come across this:

yes, that's right. a "novelization" of DOOM.

basically, a book...of a movie...based on a computer game.

as someone close to me at the time said, "THAT should be a good read."

a thanksgiving wish

because i love fletch so much, AND because i can't seem to talk my self out of a challenge, AND if i'm going down, i'm taking a lot of people with me, AND because i'm going to be gone for a bit and wanted to leave with something good, AND because i can...

i give you:

time machine presents: a recreation of the catching of the first thanksgiving turkey.

as told by a group of college students circa november 1995. that's right, 10 years ago.

the cast (in order of speaking appearance)

-cade
-just dave
-fletch
-an indian named joel
-an indian named andy
-muffin

with special guest appearance by:
-bobo the manchild

ENJOY IT HERE

(note: though it's a small video (3:48), it still takes a bit of time to load so be patient)

(note #2: it is in WMV form. if you do not have windows media player i suggest you find a machine that does. it's 1 in the morning and i am tired and not making another version.)

(note #3: the sound sucks. so, the likelihood of you having to turn your speakers way up is pretty good.)

happy thanksgiving.

aloha

tonight at 9pm et, on espn, the dream begins anew.

the 2005-2006 college basketball season OFFICIALLY starts for those of us who profess our eternal love and undying support to the jayhawks of the university of kansas. true there is one game under their belt (a 90-66 victory over an outmatched idaho state) but that wasn't televised (except for on jayhawk tv which, strangely enough, doesn't extend to beverly, mass. of course, neither does espn full court, but that's another comcast-centered rant for another time.)

no no. it's tonight. it's the opening round of the maui classic, where a very talented and VERY young jayhawk squad will no doubt put up a fight but ultimately get dismissed by an older, wiser arizona team (prove me wrong boys) that the season truly begins.

with last year's devastating conclusion a distant echo, i stand along side my fellow jayhawks and look forward (outcome be damned) to an exciting season.

rock chalk jayhawk.

two things

one i am excited about, and the other i am frustrated over:

1) this.
and cue arthur's design process...go.
.
2) i have been way too hooked on web sudoku lately (i blame mrs. wilcox entirely for introducing this atrocity to me.) i have slaved to not only get the puzzles finished, but to get them finished in a great time.

yesterday, i finished with my personal best of 8 min. 13 sec. i checked myself against the masses and found out that i, in fact, suck:

even on easy...

below average. geesh.

i will not try to get good at this. i will not try to get good at this. i will not try...

hot off the press

some of my favorites from the new batch.

drum roll, please....

this post SHOULD be about the old lady who sat next to me at "capote" tonight and nearly lost her life because she had no capacity for inner rationalization, which forced her to vocalize every mental discovery out loud...EVERY ONE!

"That's Kansas."
"Who Is That Actor?"
"I Don't Think He Should Have Done That."

but this post isn't about that. because i realize she'll be dead soon enough without my help, and i have other things to talk about.

like this:

here's the listening station/rec pit

another view

behind the counter

the bathroom

let's take another look at that door

and here's the inside of the door. (notice also the nifty chalkboard wall.)

so, i guess there's only one thing left to do. and....

...go.

thanks. and support your local record stores.

"start spreading the news...

...i'm leaving today."

tentatively, the title of this post has always been reserved for the mass email that i was going to send out coinciding with the announcment of my triumphant move to new york city. but, seeing that i never made that move and the likelyhood of ever doing so is waning, i decided to use it here and now to let you all know that i will be back on sunday night after a jam-packed weekend in the "city that never shuts up."

dr james, brooke and i are off to new york for some fun and craziness. pictures and stories upon our return i'm sure.

play nice while we're away. word.

you want progress? i'll give you progress...

so close i can taste it.

with still no official idea when (insert record store name here) records will be open...i can say this. it will be soon.

some crazy rainbow lady captured some of the latest excitement around the shop, but i figured after a day like today, i would add my next installment.

so here goes:

here's me getting the blue going in this crazy jayhawk-inspired color scheme.

one more coat on the back of the half wall and i am done painting (except for the bathroom, which hasn't been touched.) either way, i can honestly say that i don't ever want to paint anything ever again. also note the free couch near the window. nothing is better than a free couch.

here's a good look of the back of the store taking shape. also notice the new facing for the counter and the polka-dot wall behind it.

a better pic of the counter and upholstered (that's right, upholstered) polka-dot wall.

my newly acquired rolling rack. complete with drawers that i don't know what to do with. also the t-shirt rack is in place and ready.

finally, i can start laying out some inventory.

and speaking of inventory...have a gander at the hot-of-the-press (insert record store name here) tees (generation 1.) special thanks to leanne, brooke, art, dan and to a certain extent, james, for all the help with these beauts.

more to come kids. more to come.
