rick ocasek said it best...

..."let the good times roll."

i got home from my 2 days of work at mohegan sun (i won't post about the fact that i should ban myself from all casinos, but i could) to see the first of my boxes of inventory (thanks art!) waiting for me in the living room.

what a joy to open the box and see this:

what a feeling!

let the fun begin, right?

in this little lot we have more than 70 vinyl LPs.

there's the good, the bad and the ugly.

the brilliant, the simply unforgivable and the just plain disturbing.

i won't do this for every shipment. but i had to this time.

thanks.

the most agonizing 5 minutes

i am an ebay freak. there is no denying this. i have bought everything that you can possibly buy through our friendly little e-swap meet.

and now, i have a serious reason to feed the addiction. a record store to stock.

i have had my eye on several "used cd" lots for the last week or so. two of the bigger ones close today. needless to say, for the sake of my business, i have been glued to the computer screen for most of this sunny, gorgeous new england day.

well, the first one just closed and my heart is still racing.

there is a common practice amongst the more experienced ebay-ers called "sniping." "sniping" is simply this:

you lay low and watch an auction you are interested in...fighting the urge to bid. as the time runs down, you notice that one person has held the high bid for about 3 days and is probably comfortable with the fact that no one is trying to outbid them. then the auction gets to within minutes of closing. but, you hide a little longer. and then with some time less than 30 secs remaining (the closer you wait until "0" depends entirely on your own ability and e-savvy - it truly is a skill,) you place your max bid, toppling the once-confident newbie and watch him scramble to re-bid as time runs out on his dream purchase.

it's cruel. it's ruthless. and it's a blast.

however, i no longer "snipe" auctions because for every one of me, there are 4 or 5 more of me out there on the same auction. so, when we all snipe at the same time, the price just gets out of control and it's no longer worth it. the thrill of the kill is replaced by mundane "competition."

no, my new method is this: if i can, i place a bid with about 30 minutes remaining just to test the other guy's max bid. if i take the lead, great. then i wait and watch as people do or do not try to out-bid me in those waning minutes. now, i know full well that if anyone is stalking the auction, they will make their move within the final minute. so if nothing has happened by 5 'til, i up my max bid to just over what i want to pay, sit back and let the sweat start pouring.

4 minutes to go: nothing.

3 minutes: nothing. the anxiety starts to build.

2: STILL NOTHING!

1: someone bids. but it's not enough to top me. my stomach tightens and my heart is pounding. "i am not losing this thing" i think to myself.

30 seconds: all hell breaks loose. the bids start to sky rocket as the "snipers" kill each other off. "should i bite the bullet and raise the bid again?" "no. stay cool, man. stay cool"

0 seconds: silence

if i win, fantastic. if not, then someone obviously wanted it more or is much richer than i. either way, more power to them. more times than not, i win these though. like the first of my two today.

i won the first. i don't hold out too much hope for the second as it is already at the max i would pay, but for this one, i will muster up another $100 or so and revert back to my old days of hiding in the e-bushes with the rest of the jerks.

reflections

of course, today is the 4th anniversary of the terror attacks of 2001.

i won't get into the effects that that day had on me. there is simply not enough time or space here. but, i do want to offer up this:

i have flown every year on september 11th since 2002. i never once have had an issue with this. (my mother, on the other hand, freaks out every time.) well, today was no different. this morning, i flew to louisville for another week of bank-related fun. but, this day, i flew to louisville through charlotte, NC.

the reason this is important is that when you fly from boston to charlotte (and sit on the right side of the plane as i often do) you are afforded some spectacular views of just about every major city along the eastern seaboard. including new york and washington d.c.

so, as i sat in logan, fully aware of the secret acts that took place there 4 years ago, i checked my watch at 8:45 am. and again at 9:03. i did my moment of silence. no big deal.

i got on the plane and quickly nodded off as usual. shortly into the flight, i opened my eyes and looked out the window. "oh, it's new york," i thought. then, with over the rhine's "give me strength" coming through my headphones, the date screamed into my head again. so i stared at the still gaping hole in the financial district as we cruised by, reailzed the irony...and then i lost it. i teared up right there as the lower tip of manhattan slowly forced it's way too far to my left for me to see it any more through my tiny window. i regained myself (fortunately, there was no one next to me, that would have been interesting) and continued to watch the passing cityscapes on this glorious morning. philadelphia. then baltimore....then d.c. jarred again, i focused on the pentagon and the tears came back.

all this to say, that unplanned, i had my own full-scale eyewitness connection to today's remembrance in just under 30 minutes. viewing these beautiful cities from the air took me back to the eerie awfulness of that day. i don't know if it was good, but it was strangely necessary.

that's it.

television review: reunion

given the plethora of great viewing on tv last night, i finally settled in and gave the encore presentation of FOX's reunion a shot. this is a show that i was intrigued by, given it's "daring" use of time and narrative. (ie: each episode is a year in the lives of the six main characters, culminating in the murder of one of them BY one of them after 20 years (episodes.)) make sense? good. the show is crafty in its use of exposition. choosing to hide certain facts about characters to further the suspense and intrigue. the yearly footage is inter-cut with the present day murder investigation following the funeral.

in the pilot, aptly named "1986," we meet the six friends as graduating high school seniors embarking on lives full of promise and hope. then, of course, all hell breaks loose and i think to myself, "man, if each of the 20 years is as rough as this one, i would imagine they all kill themselves pretty quickly."

fortunately for the producers, that may provide a quick out when the show is cancelled.

though i look forward to finding out, as the series unfolds, "who did it" and "for which reason," and uncovering all of the not-so-hidden clues, i will simply have to wait and read about it in entertainment weekly come next spring. for this show is unwatchable.

let's start with the writing. every line was telegraphed from blocks away. and the one-liners were tired and redone. just because the episode takes place 20 years ago doesn't mean that they had to act like it was written 20 years ago. i laughed out loud more than a few times (reminder: it's a drama, not a comedy) at the inane banter between these characters. ("i think wham! is going to be the next beatles!" ugh.)

and speaking of characters, how interesting are they? let's see, there's the goody-goody who decides her life needs an adventure. there's the "perfect couple" who aren't as perfect as they seem. the upstanding best friend who would do anything to protect the others, but has a secret. then, there's the slut and the boring mama's boy who's secretly in love with the slut. oh yeah, and the goody-goody is secretly in love with the mama's boy.

how inventive.

the actors, though pretty enough, barely pass as likable. maybe it's the writing, maybe it's the over-the-top use of bad 80's fashion, but i tend to think that over-acting is over-acting. period.

the real fatal flaw with reunion is that it sacrifices substance and merit for something as lowly as a gimmick. i can just see the pitch meeting in my head:

exec 1: that 24 show is a big hit. what if we did a show like that, but instead of hours, it's measured in years?

exec 2: i'm listening.

exec 1: we could tell the story of some friends who go through some tough times that shape the relationships and stuff.

exec 3: what if one of them dies?

exec 2: i love it. who can we get to write the story.

exec 1: who cares? people will watch based on the premise alone!

exec 3: that's true.

exec 2: well, i'm convinced. you guys wanna make out?

execs 1 and 3: okay.

...or something like that.

basically, i have seen the characters. i'm moderately interested in how it ends. but, i don't want to watch it ever again. i mean, how long do they expect to continue to refer to the victim as "the deceased?" or "your friend?" and how many disasters can these friends go through? don't they deserve ONE YEAR without a car accident or a miscarriage? well, they DON'T deserve it, but i digress. the entire point of this show is paper thin at best. so, unfortunately, i, along with the other 7 people who watched "1986," may never know the "who" and "why" because this show simply can't last much longer.

and i'm not at all sad about that.

allow me to introduce...

for those of you who don't know, i have been kicking around the idea of opening a record store here on the beautiful north shore.

well, today my phone rang with some good news and on friday i sign the lease to venture into the world of capitalism. i can't tell you how excited i am about this, but i need some help. i've been racking my brain to come up with the perfect name for the store.

here's where you come in.

i need all of you, my creative and beautiful friends, to throw out your suggestions for a name for the best little record shop since "championship vinyl."

keep it clean, i'm serious about this.

this just in...

DUBAI (Reuters) - The al Qaeda group in
Iraq on Sunday hailed the hurricane deaths in America as the "wrath of God," according to an Internet statement.

"God attacked America and the prayers of the oppressed were answered," said the statement, which was posted on an Islamic Web site often used by the insurgent group fighting the U.S.-backed Iraqi government.

in a related story, president bush has officially announced that hurricanes are now to be considered "instruments of terror." the white house released, in a statement tuesday, that any country harboring natural disasters will be dealt with as a natural disaster. it was unclear if all natural disasters were now on the international watch list, or if it applied soley to hurricanes and tropical storms. there is, however, an uncomfirmed report that a wild fire in arizona was recently added to the federal "no-fly" list. representatives for the fire declined an invitation to comment.

there is growing concern among washington insiders over the fact that both north korea and iran have been known associates of the "axis-of-evil-weather," as it is now known, in the past decade. when asked if prominent earthquakes found hiding in iran would lead to any kind of military action, one unnamed source had this to say:

"It was only a matter of time before we were able to link these evil countries to terrorism. Now, we have the proof we need."
