until further notice...

my trip to mexico is being re-evaluated on a hour-to-hour basis due to the fact that that media-whore, emily, is bearing her ugly ass down on the gulf coast of northern mexico/southern texas.

the trick isn't getting TO durango (which is safely on the other side of the continent) but rather getting stuck there as the rain moves in here for good on tuesday night.

on the plus side, i have never been in a hurricane, so there may be stories yet.

two other blog-related things since i'm here

1) university of kansas imposes 2-year sanctions on itself due to infractions in it's 3 major sports programs.

re: men's basketball: thank you roy williams, for allowing your "mistake" to further twist the knife in this, the worst off-season in the 107 year history of the KU program. have fun in your golden tobacco plantation with your precious national title and enjoy your free pass as you watch the aftermath without tarnishing your "beloved" reputation. bastard.

2) the kansas city royals and detroit tigers in a bench-clearing brawl sunday after runelvys hernandez hits his 3rd batter of the game...in the head. total of 7 players and coaches eventually ejected. note to detroit's carlos guillen: why were you upset? he didn't do it on purpose. he's a ROYALS pitcher. they don't have that kind of control.

Cade, on the Roy Williams thing, it's like your best friend dating your sister, proposing to her, marrying her, having a couple of kids with her, then without warning, abandoning her in the middle of the night to fend for herself...then, after your sister re-marries a great guy, calling to say that he was cheating on her all along and that's how she got syphillis.

On the brawl...give these guys a break. The Royals feel like they need to win SOMETHING, I guess that something was a fight and not a ballgame. Whatever, at least the Royals made the highlight reel on SportsCenter.

You've never been in a hurricane? Wow. I was stuck on Peaks Island, Maine for Hurricane Bob in 1991. They had closed the ferry system down before it got really bad. Power got knocked out and a pine tree with a good 12 ft. circumference fell in the yard, narrowly missing the kitchen alcove we were sitting in. The water rose to within 8 feet of the front door. An island is one place you don't want to be for a hurricane. Other than that, it's not that bad.

Re: Roy--
What Muffin said. Plus, I find it very interesting that the last time KU basketball had sanctions, it was for Roy's first year, because of the mistakes from the previous coach's term. Looks like he decided payback was somehow due. Now what I don't get is: KU messes up in '88, the NCAA is the one catching it and setting punishment. This time, the NCAA isn't involved in the sanctions, but it took over two years for the violations to be noticed or acted upon?? Why the delay? Plus I feel very sorry now for the poor schmuck of an interim AD who got to be the patsy for violations in 3 different sports clubs.

Oh, and KU's answer for all this: one more compliance officer this year, plus two more next year. I'm starting to get the feeling that, if KU were in charge of Kansas' school funding, their response to the state supreme court order to increase public school funding would have been to give all $148 million to the KU athletics department budget. Goodness knows they don't have enough money or high-salaried staff down there...maybe they should also raise ticket prices again; that's got to be the reason for our post-season failures: that the clientele in the stands aren't high-class enough. But I digress...

re: ku.. at first, i thought they were just grasping, like "roy won the championship, how can we undermine that?" but, then i realized that it was just standard procedure. why it took two years? who knows.

re: hurricanes.. we didn't get many of those in KC. i slept through a couple of earthquakes while living in california and have weathered countless tornados...so, i'm not worried in the least. besides, i'm 80+ miles inland.

re: royals fight.. sometimes these things build up some morale. sometimes. either way, i don't care. i'm glad to see some passion. but, if i hear ANYONE at espn mispronounce jeremy affeldt's name again...i'll scream. HE'S BEEN IN THE LEAGUE FOR 6 YEARS PEOPLE! GET IT RIGHT!

re: my trip.. it's a no go. we're gonna try again in september. i'm off to play a little pre-emily golf.

re:hurricane, I can't figure out why every time a new hurricane is coming, the TV media show footage of people boarding up their windows with brand-new pieces of plywood. Please ask the folks down there if they know a reason why this is.

you mean other than keeping things from flying through your windows?

Um, yeah, let me finish that question:

Don't people recycle their 'hurricane boards' from one storm to the next? I can't imagine they are only good for a single use...but on the news all I ever see getting nailed up are brand new sheets of plywood.

Does that make more sense now? A little??

some do. i saw an interview with people who were busting out the "hurricane boards." but, down here, they don't get hit that much so it makes more sense that there are a lot of newbies.

but, what do i know? i'm jsut a visitor.
