too pressing to not do it
in honor/reaction to this, i offer up a question:
what are the best (and by "best" i mean "most memorable" - for good or bad) keyboard hooks ever (and by "ever" i mean "of the '80s" - 'cause, as anyone with any common sense should know, the keyboard should be relegated solely to that particular time period)?
for me? (in no particular order) *
1) "take on me" by a-ha
2) "obsession" by animotion
3) "the final countdown" by europe
4) "separate ways (worlds apart)" by journey
5) "funky town" by pseudo echo **
what others?
* - list was hastily thrown together. omissions are probable and there are no regrets
** - cheating i know. but the lipps inc. version came out in the '70s and i have to stick to my rules.

I was expecting a much longer hiatus... I mean what kind of wacked hooey was that anyway? Do better next time.
I don't think this is a keyboard solo, but there is a lovely piano solo in the middle of Peter Cetera's One Good Woman.
What about Billy Joel's Pressure? Does that count?? say yes...
pressure is a good one...though it was released in the '70s. plus, billy is probably automatically DQed since he is, in fact, the piano man. that transcends the lowly 'keyboard.'
also, i'm not so much looking for 'solos' as for 'hooks.' there's a difference.
also also, i never said it was a hiatus. i will do better next time.
"Touch and Go" - Emerson, Lake, and Powell* 1986.
Probably not too memorable as they were one of the cheesy reunions of a band that needed to stay gone**. But the keys lick is very much kin to Final Countdown.
* as opposed to Palmer.
**The other being "Trio" from 1989 with Emerson, Palmer, and some other dude who looks like Boy George. (shudder)
fine.

5 comments and no one has mentioned "Jump" by Van Halen...
PS - Dale, your avatar graphic rules. Enzo DiPede & Billy Gazonas for the win!
john, i am forever your best friend. ah, the memories.
gino schiraldi cooked a mean pizza...when he wasn't kicking ass in the backfield.
oh and, kudos dones. a song that i hate myself for not thinking of. (sorry alex)
anything by The Cars
"Jump" Van Halen
Such an integral part of my childhood, the Kansas City Comets...
I've searched long for their 'theme' song, which also included an unforgettable keyboard hook...alas, it's nowhere to be found
"Chains of Love" Erasure.
Milder 'hooks', but I think they qualify as keyboard hooks nonetheless:
"The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats
"Africa" by Toto
"Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran
Oh, and I have to say that "Pressure" was NOT released in the 70s. The Nylon Curtain was released in '82.
Mwahahahha.
I've been meaning to start a post like this, although replace "keyboard hooks" with "jingle bells," a la "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "She's Like the Wind."
Heard Nu Shooz' tune "I Can't Wait" again on the radio coming to work this morning, and had to add it to the awesome keyboard hooks list.
