Cade,

Thanks for restoring my hope in humanity and for reminding me of why I love you.

If I read another blog from some 30 something who has been living for this day...or worse, CAMPS OUT for 24 fucking hours to SPEND MONEY on a piece of children's fantasy literature...

god help me.

Thanks for posting this in blogland. They need a sane voice like you.

oh, and if i could add one thing. The series ceased to exist as children's literature at book 5.

In example, Book 7 has a bloody death toll of over 50 people, and a cuss count as follows:

1 - Bitch
2 - Bastards
1 - Arse
3 - effing's
and a bunch of "hells"

...just my 2 cents.

Well, sorry to interrupt this nerd-fest over here.

But I have only one mature thing to say:

HAW-ha.

I can't wait until the day B is forced to read these books to his kids and realizes how amazing they are... :)

Beck - Don't get any ideas for christmas gifts, OK. My kids are still toddlers.

Yeah, I figured I'd be reading these with them about 10 years from now. But a LOT can happen in 10 years: no more potter hype, some new popular book will come out, I could die, etc.

For the record, I would have said exactly what Eric has back in October of 2005. I'm not much of a reader and I was never interested in the books. The movies were interesting, but never got me "hooked". My wife kept bugging me about reading them, so around Nov. 1st of 2005 I picked up book #4 to try to read it before the movie came out 3 weeks later.

I read books 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 (in that order) by the time the movie came out. That's right, around 3000 pages of literature in about 3 weeks. They are just that good. I do believe, however, that if I had started with book 1 or 2, I may not have found it so gripping. But it really becomes more adult oriented around the 3rd or 4th book and that's where I had started. I certainly didn't camp out for the book or dress up in costume for the book release. But I did look forward to it being released. And it was another great book.

Dave,

Dude...i read the books in the exact same order, albeit over a much longer space of time. And like you and Cade, I just wasn't interested in all the hype. i was content enough with the movies. Everyone was reading them in our house church and i knew i needed to read for myself, as someone would certainly blow the finer details before the movies could be released. Pretty amazing series man.

James, that's pretty funny about the order of reading the books. I've actually had a few friends I've turned onto the series that I told to start with book 1 but give it until book 3 or 4 if they weren't hooked. Of course, getting interested is never really a problem. It's sort of like Moulin Rouge...everyone I've ever recommended the movie to I told they had to give it at least 30 minutes...no turning it off in the first 15 (which I almost did).

cade:

do you like xanadu?

jesse,

that is a loaded question. i will answer it in list form:

like
-the song
-the movie (for the fact that it is so terrible...it's classic)
-olivia newton-john
-gene kelley
-"dancin'" is awesome
- rollerskating

dislike
-broadway's trend to take old, campy movies and turn them into schlocky musicals instead of rewarding and encouraging originality. thus giving us "xanadu: the musical"

I came to this conversation late (thanks stupid dial-up computer!), but I am so with you on this. And Agent B. I saw the movies, that was good enough for me. Children's literature, I thought. But then again, I was reading Stephen King, nonfiction about teenagers' lives, even edgar Allen Poe, more so than what the teachers used to give out for "summer reading" and what my friends were reading.

Just recently I started the Potter series, mostly because my neighbor has all of them so I don't have to buy any of them. Plus, I need a break from the career books I'm reading (being unemployed, still, and all).
