it's like i never left
so today i did the load-in for the miss kansas usa pageant at this place:
in lawrence, ks.
for those who don't know, this is the lied center at the university of kansas. a place at which i not only cut my technical theatre teeth on, but i also helped break in (sometimes literally) when it opened my freshman year in college.
it had been a 6 years since i had set foot in this place, and today was full of wave after wave of not only nostalgia, but a distinct sense of pride at the work that i did when i was there. looking around, seeing even a small handful of the projects that i worked on a decade ago, i couldn't help but smile the whole day.
and knowing where everything is, from extension cords to bathrooms, is always a nice feeling.
i even made an unplanned but necessary trip to old murphy hall and to the university theatre venues i spent so many hours in as a student. all the while, chatting away with a favorite former GTA of mine that now leads the tech department at my beloved lied center. it's a small and lovely circular world sometimes.
to make the matter even more great and surreal, every song i have heard on the radio today has been from the 90's...or more specific, from the years '93-'98. i mean, you hear songs like pearl jam's jeremy and no rain by blind melon on a pretty regular basis...but dreamlover by mariah carey? no, this is all just for me. i am convinced.
so, as the weekend full of strange flashes from a time in my life that i truly love continues tomorrow and sunday, i will enjoy every moment.
this city of lawrence will always be one of the places i can call home. and even though it's currently incarnating the form of a dingy holiday inn, it's always nice to have a place to call home.

in addition, there is apparently something in the air here in lawrence that affects my dreams. last night i had a dream that was very reminiscent of the series of german-terrorist/die hard dreams i had while i was in college here.
that's right, a SERIES of dreams...like sequels. and always with german terrorists.
suffice it to say, that had my alarm not awakened me at the proper time, i am not sure how our hero would have gotten out of this newest interrogation.
Like Alan Rickman? Cuz he's cool.
Have any of the contestants this weekend blindly walked into you practicing their pose and smile like at Miss MO?
a fine post friend. makes me wish i were there.
Your links now open in the same window! Sweet!
it's been like 6 months.
good eye.
No, it's only been recently that it's worked for me.
Anyway, I still live in Lawrence, though I'll someday soon be moving to Olathe. How weird is that??
Whatever. I stopped trying because I hated the old way. So nyeah.
