mid-afternoon time waster - cade-style
yeah, so i stole the idea from gentry. but, he probably just stole it from someone else anyway, so...
in an effort to thinly disassociate myself with the character rob gordon (made popular in nick hornby's book, the consequent movie starring john "the man" cusack, and deperate manifestation as a broadway musical, "high fidelity") i will refrain from using the phrase "top 5..."
what we are looking for here are the classic songs (5 or otherwise) that should NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE be covered by ANYONE other than the original artist.
my picks:
"bohemian rhapsody" - queen
"thriller" - michael jackson
"a day in the life" - the beatles
"smells like teen spirit" - nirvana
others that have been mentioned in my presence:
"stairway to heaven" - led zepplin
"come sail away" - styx
"smoke on the water" - deep purple
"november rain" - guns 'n' roses (or any guns song from the axl era (sic)) *
these can be songs that may or may not have already been covered. however, i would rather we stay with the ones that haven't, but you are all grown ups and i can't hold your hand.
so what do you got? let's hear 'em.
and if you behave, there may be a subsequent post that is somewhat related.
*-with all due respect to this entrant's picks, i have a problem. the delineation of "axl era" guns makes no sense. there is no other "era" in regard to this band. if axl wasn't involved, it simply wasn't g'n'r.

12 Comments:
"I still haven't found what I'm looking for" - U2
"It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine) - R.E.M.
"The rhythm is going to get you" - Gloria Estefan
*Actually, the last one shouldn't be covered by anyone INCLUDING the original artist.
"Walk this Way" -Aerosmith with Run DMC
She's Like the Wind - Patrick Swayze.
(I still don't get this game, do i?)
My high school garage band power trio covered "Day in the Life". I thought we did prety damn good. It was just that middle part (drag a comb across my head, etc) and we stuck it in between 2 other songs.
b- that's why it's a hard song to do. it's tough to do all the parts and i don't see anyone gutsy (or talented) enough to pull it off.
Does "Sounds of Silence" work?
not including "sounds of grandpa"?
Anything done by David Lee Roth while in Van Halen, remade by David Lee Roth from his Van Halen days.
agreed. Sounds of Grampa stands in the parody/satire corner.
"don't worry, be happy" by bobby mcferrin and "you can call me al" by paul simon.
A Boy Named Sue, Jonny Cash
Hotel California, Eagles
Jump, Van Halen (agree w/ before girl)
Creep, Green Day
Intergalactic, Beastie Boys
Gracie, Ben Folds (okay, I have a daughter so i'm a sucker for that song, and I love his style.)
Hmmm, no one's mentioned "Under the Sea" from the Little Mermaid...hmmm...
RE: Hotel California - the Gypsy Kings did a mariachi cover which was on the Big Lebowski soundtrack; it was fairly good, in my opinion. Can't hold a candle to the original, but the intro is awesome.
Anyway, my submission: any song anyone in a reality TV show tries to cover should not be covered. This *should* go without saying, but sadly, it happens anyway...
